Welcome back Year 13!!
Advanced Production 2007
Many congratulations to all of you on fantastic media AS results; I am beyond proud and no words can express how delighted I was for you all. WELL DONE from me, Ms Brookes and Mrs Dymioti. It's lovely to see you all back for Media A2 as well.
No time to waste now, you need to get cracking with your pre-production work straight away. The production will all be over in about 6-7 weeks time so now's the time to really focus the mind.
Don't forget, you have print materials (album cover and press release) to produce as well as a music video!
Important dates:
Shoot weekends
Test shoot weekend:
15+16 September
2nd shoot weekend:
22/23 September
3rd shoot weekend:
29/30 September
These weekends must be kept clear so as not to restrict filming opportunities. You will also need to utilise time during the school day and after school as much as possible from now on for the next 6 weeks for planning, shooting, editing.
School closures
Weds 19th September - 1/2 day
Thurs 27th September - day off (INSET Day)
These dates will be ideal for filming so keep them free
Coursework deadlines
Production deadline: 12 October (some flexibility if needed)
Draft essay deadline: 29 October
Final project deadline: 12 November
The details are all in the new schedule handed out in the 1st lesson back. Ask me for a copy of you were absent.
Books/ wider reading
As part of your research and planning, you may want to have a look at the books in the department on album covers and music videos The are full of stunning art work and images and are really inspirational!
Group and individual blogs
I haven't had a chance to go through them all yet and see what you've been up to, but I know there's been a lot of progress in several groups over the summer so well done. Keep blogging your evidence and keeping it all up to date so you can get marks for it. Mrs Dymioti and I will be looking through it all over this week and working closely with each group so if you have any problems or concerns you can ask then.
Finally - Hollywood. If you're hoping to come but haven't paid your deposit, see me as a matter of urgency.
Thanks everyone; good luck with the project and the new term

Group meetings
Ok I know some of the groups are racing along, but I have concerns about some of you and where your project is heading. I know time is tight, so don't let this term slip away without getting to the crucial stage in this project. The bottom line is this:
regardless of absence, cancelled lessons, end of term etc: by Thursday of this week you should have arranged a meeting with me to listen to your final track selection, made a decision and have some idea of an outline treatment for your video.
Once you have got this far, at least your group can go off for the holidays in the knowledge that you are all moving and thinking in the right direction.
Groups: this is how I see it as of Monday 16th July (please check group blogs for individual group feedback)
2E - I'm feeling confident about your progress, looking forward to the results of your location recce, love the track, keep up the momentum
3E - again feeling confident about your progress, excellent choice of track, now let's move forward on the idea, grab a slot with me as soon as poss to talk things through. very concerned about the lack of a group blog though; I have now set this up for you and expect to see all your evidence on it as soon as.
1C - no communication with me as yet, but I can see from the blog that you are making progress. love the one track on the blog.
2C - liked the initial choice of songs, but we need a decision and some focus.
3C - I kn0w you have made progress but as yet I haven't heard any of the 3 final tracks; ideas look good though
4C - feeling confident about your final 2 tracks; I know you're working on potential treatments so let's make a final decision asap and move this one on
So - lots of group meetings needed, communication with me, some real focus and determination to see this through, and good record keeping so things don't get forgotten in 6 weeks time. Even a 15 minute meeting with me could move things on loads.
This week is very flexible for me; I am available much of the time to listen to tracks and finalise ideas. Free slots are:
Tuesday: all morning(!), break, P6, part of lunch and after school
Wednesday: P2, 3, 4, 5, break, lunch, possibly P6
Thursday: P2, 3, possibly P6, 7, 8, break, lunch, after school until 4.10
Friday: P1, plus during the media lessons 2 - 5
update: bookings made for 2C 1pm tues, 3E 12.45 weds
Make sure we meet before Friday to be confident of a decision as the last day is bound to be manic!

I know it's the last day, i know it's a short day BUT Friday's lessons will be crucial to wrap things up before the holidays so make sure you are there.
And yes, we have a special guest - the lovely Jake will be with us for the Britney screening, and to listen to your final track choices and your treatments. So don't miss out!!
Also a chance to say goodbye to Ms Brookes. drop your pound coins into me asap and make sure you get to sign the card before friday.

Britney edit
come on guys, we're close to the finish with the britney video but still some outstanding problems. I want to show this in the lesson on Friday so you can see what works/ what doesn't regarding performance, lip synching, framing etc.
If your group have signed their section off with me then fine, but if you haven't, the final edit is being put together on tues and I need to see you.
Completed groups are 1E/C, 2E, 2C, 4C. There are ongoing problems with 3E and 3C that won't take long to resolve but are holding things up, so please come and find out what needs to be done.
Thanks Ms B

Oh baby, baby
ok here we go, get your dancing shoes on, it's time for some fun, Britney-style!!
Filming slots are Tues afternoon, and weds morning for C groups, weds morning and fri afternoon for E groups. No more time after that so work fast.
You'll need your portable music players and speakers, with the the track downloaded and your school uniforms(!)
For the girls its blouses, ties and skirts - and don't forget the hair bobbles.
For the boys, shirts, ties, blazers or jackets, trousers
Locations - I would suggest the best places as a start would be the 6th form common room and the lower school lockers corridor.
Improvise as much as possible and help out across the groups where necessary. If you want to do extra, you can come and join in with the other class if you're free.
Take a clipboard with you and don't forget to use your whiteboards and number all your shots carefully - this will be essential when it comes to editing.
GOOD LUCK!!

Your group blog
your group blog will feature links to your personal blogs
they will be marked as evidence of all work completed by the group
they will replace your portfolio as far as possible; your group blog URL will be sent to the exam board as evidence of group planning and production
paper evidence submitted will be limited - see below
the youtube link to your final music video will be included, as will links to test footage, shot trials etc. the more evidence of technical decisions and revisions, the better
your final album cover will also feature, as can test shots etc
it will be essential to blog everything you do as a group as far as possible.
for example, it should include:
minutes of meetings
daily/ weekly group diary entries
group ideas
your band/artist descriptions
advance planning
treatments, shooting scripts, schedules
questions and communications between the group
shot lists, re-shoot lists, capture lists, sketches and storyboards do not have to be posted but there should be evidence of discussions around these key processes and summaries of the key points in relation to them.
these will be submitted on paper as usual; keep all work done by hand in the hard copy group folder.
the M drive folders will contain templates as usual
don't waste time typing up as you go along; you only need to submit samples

Your personal blog
use your personal blog to create your research and early planning portfolio
limited paper evidence will be submitted
you should include analysis, video links and images, web links etc
make it as visual and analytical as possible
keep it focussed - quantity is not the issue here
your lessons will be the springboard for your research and planning. the lessons are planned to inspire your research in various directions and to get your planning underway
your personal blog will replace the individual research and planning section of your portfolio as far as possible. they will provide a significant part of the evidence for the individual contribution marks
your blog URL will be sent to the exam board as evidence of work completed.
areas to research:
music videos
album covers
tracks
a chosen artist or artists
a music video director
a chosen genre
other inspirational media or art
promotion and marketing case studies - how an artist has used myspace, for example
indie record labels
a music channel, station or magazine
early planning:
your own initial ideas for tracks, music videos, shots, actors, locations, treatments etc
not too much detail here as the majority of planning should be done by the group and shown on the group blog
the posts on your personal blog are to demonstrate evidence of your personal research, ideas and suggestions before the group settle on a final idea
once the group have chosen a track and the project is underway, you will all post to the main project blog. however you can still continue to add extra stuff to your personal blog.
